Neurodiversity at Work: Support for Employees

I’m an Employee

Work is rarely straightforward. Workload, communication, expectations, the environment and your own capacity do not always line up.

If something at work is becoming difficult, you may be trying to understand what is happening, what could change, or where to go for support.

This page brings together practical information on Access to Work, workplace support, assistive technology and legal advice so you can explore your options at your own pace.

START WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING AT WORK

You do not need to begin with a list of things people with ADHD or other forms of neurodivergence are supposed to need.

It can be more useful to look at the situation itself.

TASK · ENVIRONMENT · RELATIONSHIPS

What is getting in the way?
What would you like to be different?
What might realistically change?

Describe the barrier → explore options → try something → review

Sometimes the answer may be an adjustment, equipment or additional support. Sometimes clearer expectations, communication, workload or changes to the working environment may matter more.

ACCESS TO WORK: A PRACTICAL GUIDE

A clear guide to Access to Work, including who it may be relevant to, how to apply, what support may be available and what happens after you apply.

It also helps you describe the workplace barrier you are experiencing, so you can approach the scheme without needing to know the solution in advance.

Assistive Technology & Workplace Support

Via Remtek Systems Ltd

We signpost to Remtek Systems Ltd, an established UK provider of assistive technology and specialist workplace support.

They may be relevant if you want help exploring practical ways of working or identifying equipment and support that could reduce a workplace barrier.

They can provide:

• Access to Work guidance
• Workplace needs assessments
• Assistive technology and training
• Ergonomic equipment and support
• Coaching and practical workplace support

Funding

Some support may be funded through Access to Work, depending on your circumstances and the type of support required.

Your employer may also need to be involved where equipment, adjustments or other support need to be put in place at work.

Assistive technology in practice

We worked with Remtek Systems on an article showing some of the ways assistive technology can be used at work.
